AQ-10 Test

The autism spectrum quotient (AQ-10) tool is recommended for use with adults with possible autism who do not have a moderate or severe learning disability. This may help identify whether an individual should be referred for a comprehensive autism assessment. However, the test is generic; with a strong male bias. Therefore, use it as a guide only. Trust your instincts, you know yourself better than anyone.

1-15 is an indicator of very unlikely to be on the spectrum

16-22 an indicator of unlikely to be on the spectrum

22-30 potentially on the spectrum

30+ likely to be on the spectrum

38+ highly likely to be on the spectrum

The AQ Test is an indicator only. Official diagnosis can only be made by a professional. When I took the test, my score was 38. My official diagnosis was Asperger's, though the psychiatrist felt my true score was a little higher. But after 48 years I had learned to adapt relatively successfully. Which brings us to masking.

Masking is a tool which allows Aspie's to function in daily life. It is the word for when we put on a face, which hides our true feelings. The effort of masking continually is exhausting. It is the main cause for withdrawal. We no longer possess the capability to deal with anything. With the knowledge I've gained, I want to use the mask under my control. At least, that was the plan but autism is hard-wired, and there are some behaviours we can't control.
